Hey folks

I am used to communicate in English the whole day long .. but well, once staying abraod you love to hear your mothertongue German )
However, I would like to recommand the writer "Preethi Nair" to you, she is an Indian lady, living in London and writing very colourful. Give it a shot and start with her novel 'One hundred shades of white' ... or take the German version 'Koriandergruen und Safranrot'

Cheers,
Lady Seabreeze *gg*

PS: hope the attached link works in GER?! Amazon.de: One Hundred Shades of White: Preethi Nair: Englische Bücher

I´m amazed how many of you are liking the idea!
English for me is a nice new world, because every new language has it´s mood and feeling.

So let me summarize your postings please:
-first of all is the idea to correct each other if needed,

is this ok for everybody?
-the idea to talk about recent literature been read.

any comments about this?

-The idea to choose a topic for discussion.

Which one?

-The idea to exchange tools for learning english or links.

Very well- I got it?

yours friendly
seven.

If you do not know this link yet, I highly suggest to add www.leo.org to your favourites.
Very helpful, not only for English translations!

I've got the original of Dracula sitting on my bookshelf, but think I've never actually read it completely. I've read a translation though and love the topic! What do you particularly fancy about the book?

I'm ok with being corrected, by the way.

As for leo.org, I've got to toss in my favourite web-based dictionary as well: dict.cc (bows down to dict.cc ) leo and dict rock!

Hello Folks,

Zitat:
I think we can perfectly play it by ear here and continue from there :)
Is this a saying? I never heard that. But would like to collect such sayings.

Thx for your summary, seven!

Has anybody read an English books lately?
Yes, currently I am reading "Time for Bed" from David Baddiel (Amazon.co.uk: Time for Bed: David Baddiel: Books). Because of leck of time, I started reading it three times. Also, I find it not easy to read. But I love it!!!! Makes me really laugh.

Have a nice day,
Silvi

Hi to all in our "international" community of various languages (including but not limited to English, Denglish, Ginglish et cetera ),

Special thnx to Seven for opening this thread !

Personally I feel having an English spoken thread is an excellent idea - not only for practise but also for fun ! And I guess it is up to each of us to decide whether we take it totally and extremely serious - or whether to take it more or less as an opportunity to have fun by learning or vice versa, meaning to learn something by having fun ! By all means it is a great idea, isn't it?!

Recently I finished the latest book from Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series, "Shopaholic & Baby". To be honest I have read all those books for the second time around as I hardly can't let go of them. One could say that I am somehow addicted to those books, their characters and in particular to the writing of Sophie Kinsella. But don't worry, it is not as bad as that. - it's simply fun.

Fortunately there are some (more or less) recent additions, like "Can you keep a secret", "The Undomestic Goddess" and - the latest "Remember Me" - which I have got as an audio book and which I am going to start listening tonight. As regards the "Shopaholic" series: If you are in for a good lough, without taking things too serious and if you are open to the crazyness of a young woman with, let's say, quite special point of views regarding money and ow it should be spent... lol... then this might be for you. But the other books, like "Can you keep a secret" are as fun as well, if, as I mentioned before, you don't take things too serious.… For more info pls refer to Sophie Kinsella's website at sophiekinsella.co.uk ! Have fun!

SeeYou

I´ve never read an english book, because I want to put myself in the story. That don´t go, when I always must think about the words, what it means and so on. My english is sufficient for privat lesson class 5/6.

I can understand your writings, but I can´t couch my minds. And the grammar is still terrible

Ausrufezeichen "much" vs. "many"

Use of much and many:

much --> uncountable words such as "money"
many --> countable words such as "people"

Hi together,

if anybody really wants to improve its English: change the language when watching DVDs. At the beginning it is terrible *but hey, aren't we looking for sucessful stories for the next 4 weeks? motivate yourselves* for sure. But after some films your understanding will improve very fast. And you are catching so many words. Believe me.... skipped English at class 10 ... and then one day, years after my last English class, I have ended up in the export department, daily challenge = no fun!... during some biztrips to China I were sitting in the hotelroom, bad wheather outside, weekend.. zapping throughout the programs... by watching English movies the level increased very fast and, lucky me, I am now even able to understand "Chinenglish"

It is a disadvantage, that there is such a huge German community.. otherwise the films would be available with German subtitles only - a fact which explains the great English level of Scandinavian etc. countries where the American movies are shown in English.

Cheers from the coast

Geändert von Kuestenkind (09.07.2008 um 14:05 Uhr) Grund: the fingers were slower than my mind, lost words..
